June 22, 2012 - For the sixth consecutive day, the people of Sudan continue their resistance to the country’s repressive regime. The NCP regime has unfairly governed this country for the past 23 years; humiliating, oppressing, displacing and killing its own people. Instilling messages and policies of hatred, marginalization and racism between the people of Sudan; justifying needless wars while wasting the country’s resources. The policies of racism and marginalization have divided this country and ignited the flames of wars and conflict throughout many regions of the country. The NCP did not hesitate to commit and allow heinous crimes against the people of Sudan.
Although these student led protests that have been building momentum in the past few days in different parts of the country from Khartoum, Medani, Atbara and Elobeid and all the big cities in the country; due to the economic crisis; they remain are in fact the result of the reckless policies of the government in the past 23 years. The economic crisis in Sudan also reflects the cumulative failure of the government in the administration due to the corruption and mental unilateralism that has been running the country; making it in fact a political crisis.
The Government continues to treat peaceful protesters in the past 6 days and beyond with unequivocal brutality and violence. This week, the NCP has even allowed for their own militia dressed in plain civilian clothing to infiltrate the protests and violently attack the protesters while riot police stand by and observe. With the extreme censorship and stifling of the national media, it has been very difficult to portray to the Sudanese public, the progress of events on the ground; leaving protesters vulnerable to further violence and violations. As of 21st June, there have been 80 reported cases of injuries due to the protests.
Despite these challenges, the Sudanese people have decided to continue their resistance and take to the streets demanding this government to leave. Sudan Change Now calls on all international media to play its full role in covering these events and documenting the crimes against protesters by the current regime. We call on all human rights activists to raise their voices and be heard; objecting to this brutal treatment of civilians.
Sudan’s urgent need to Change has become a nonnegotiable right, an obligation and a necessity.
