Sudan’s most famous singer died at the age of 83 in a Khartoum hospital, Sudan’s official news agency SUNA announced in a somber statement on Saturday.

He was buried on Sunday at Al-Farouq cemetery in Khartoum where tens of thousands of peoples, including President Al-Bashir, gathered to pay their respects.

Wardi left Sudan into self-imposed exile after Al-Bashir seized power in a military coup in 1989. He returned in 2002 to a popular reception and vowed to oppose dictatorship.

died Saturday at the age of 80. Wardi, who hailed from Sudan’s northern region of Nubia, played traditional instruments such as the stringed “oud” and the” tambour drums” but also sang to more modern instrumental arrangements. He is credited with pioneering a focus on the musical accompaniment of his pieces, as opposed to earlier generations of singers who concentrated on vocals and lyrics.

His repertoire included love songs as well as more politicized pieces favoring Sudanese independence and later uprisings against military regimes in 1964 and 1986. He was associated with Sudan’s political left including the SPLM/A. He went into exile following the 1983 imposition of Islamic law codes by then-President Gaafar Numeiri. he returned to Sudan recently, he was very sick and can’t stand

His popular revolutionary songs used to be played in SPLA’s radio during 1980s!! man! clean your heart from unnecessary hatred before you commit suicide!! your comment is shocking indeed and it doesn’t represent views of our great people of RSS!

Mr. Dinka Dominated SPLA/M is entitle to his opinion. Many southerns don’t known Mr. Wardi. If he’s your icon then, expect southerns not to respect him because he’s on the wrong of the war. You however, should respect southerns if you want other to respect your icon(s). You use profanity on southerns every opportunity you get. What goes around comes around!-dead or alive.

And remember their were many people who knew Arabic, if he was a threat, he would not be allowed to mingle with the boys as he did.
        Thanks.

    Poet Ismail Hassan,
Many people say "NO Ismail Hassan then NO Wardi", Ismail Hassan was the famous poet who wrote most of Wardi poetries. Ismail Hassan said it long time ago that we’re Arab mixed with Africans bloods, we’re true Africans the same way we’re Arabs, having one side not necessarily will erase the other side of our origin..

      Jalaby kafara alleina!

Arab Sudanese and black Sudanese "are two souls in the one body" as in that poplular Sudanese poetry of Sadiiguna mengo!! Our country is beautiful because of its the culture richness! it’s a shame that we divided it with greed and ignorance! But I hope everything will be fine in the long run!

        SSLA/M Supporter,
Yes, it’s shame that Sudan is divided but don’t worry my friend it will be united again when both side figure out that doesn’t work! remember Dr. John Garang first proposal in Nivasha when he proposed to NCP that let us have confederal country with two systems in north/south and one government and rotate the Sudan presidency between us but

but NCP rejected his proposal, believe me that solution he proposed before both side will admit it again when they find out they’re going no where and it doesn’t work out! whether we agree or disagree with his New Sudan methodology, John Garang was a true unionist, very intelligent, charismatic leader who had strong presence and fight hard for his believe
