Sudan mourns musical legend Mohamed Wardi

February 19, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Tens of thousands of Sudanese citizens, including President Omer Al-Bashir attended the burial ceremony of iconic singer Mohamed Wardi who passed away on Saturday night after a long struggle with kidney complications.

Sudan’s most famous singer died at the age of 83 in a Khartoum hospital, Sudan’s official news agency SUNA announced in a somber statement on Saturday.

He was buried on Sunday at Al-Farouq cemetery in Khartoum where tens of thousands of peoples, including President Al-Bashir, gathered to pay their respects.

Wardi left Sudan into self-imposed exile after Al-Bashir seized power in a military coup in 1989. He returned in 2002 to a popular reception and vowed to oppose dictatorship.

“I am a human being, and every human being is against dictatorship and I will continue to denounce it,” he said in an interview with AFP in June 2002.

Wardi left a legacy of patriotic songs about freedom and revolutions. He sang in Arabic as well as in his Nubian dialect

Wardi, who hailed from Sudan’s northern region of Nubia, played traditional instruments such as the stringed “oud” and the” tambour drums” but also sang to more modern instrumental arrangements. He is credited with pioneering a focus on the musical accompaniment of his pieces, as opposed to earlier generations of singers who concentrated on vocals and lyrics.

            His repertoire included love songs as well as more politicized pieces favoring Sudanese independence and later uprisings against military regimes in 1964 and 1986. He was associated with Sudan’s political left including the SPLM/A. He went into exile following the 1983 imposition of Islamic law codes by then-President Gaafar Numeiri. he returned to Sudan recently, he was very sick and can’t stand

Wardi is the speaker of marginalizes people he believed in change to new Sudan, he believed that Sudan of equality where people be freed with prosperity and dignity.                     the freedom started from the south on his way to the north, his songs are songs of freedom one day new Sudan will be born, his dream stay put a reality, since Arman –Agar-Adem- Nour are on stage singing his songs.     I convey my condolences to all sudanese and family of Mohamed Wardi For the tragic death that tormented and coused death to him. May Allah rest him in peace. Mohamed Wardi was Funny, Musician, Teacher, Human right activist and Patriots. I can remember Wardi visited SPLA/SPLM Refugee camps in Ethiopia. This indicated that Wardi was a unionist. He love all sudanese regardless of their ethnicity.
