Sudan accuses its southern neighbour of seeking to undermine its security

November 13, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese defense minister, Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein, has pointed fingers at South Sudan, saying the latter is devoting all its resources to destabilise his country.

The top military official claimed that the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) seized heavy armory belonging to South Sudan during the fighting with rebels from Sudan people Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) in Blue Nile and South Kordofan.

Both states border the newly independent state of South Sudan and their population largely fought alongside the south during Sudan’s north-south second civil war 1983-2005.

Hussein stressed in the interview with Al-Shorooq TV that South Sudan’s support to rebels has become “crystal clear” to the international community. He pointed to new evidence they found, showing SPLM-N rebels operating from areas inside South Sudan including Juba and Yei.

The Sudanese army has been fighting the SPLM-N rebels in South Kordofan since June and in Blue Nile since September. Khartoum accused the rebels of provoking the fighting while SPLM-N claimed that SAF wanted to forcibly disarm them.

Since the fighting started, Khartoum has accused Juba of providing military aid to the SPLM-N, and as such has lodged two complaints so far this year, with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) protesting this.

This week, tensions escalated between the two countries after an SAF fighter jet was reported to have bombed a refugee camp inside South Sudan near the borders causing an unspecified number of casualties. The incident drew strong condemnation from the United Nations and the United States.

Sudan denied carrying out any military activity in the region and said that there are no refugee camps for Sudanese citizens in the south, but gatherings of rebel groups.

The Sudanese defense minister echoed these statements, saying that SAF does not have any military targets in South Sudan and that the battles are ongoing inside Sudan.

“It is not true that there are refugees from Sudan in the south, but there are Southern refugees in the North," Hussein said.

He also warned South Sudan that SAF soldiers fight for Islamic values and a nation.

"The brothers in the south must remember that they did not enter the cities of Juba, Wau and Malakal as conquerors, but they entered under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement" Hussein said.

In a related issue the Sudanese government said that the rebel alliance deal announced yesterday is new proof that South Sudan is hosting rebel leaders.

Yesterday the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), the two main factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur (SLM-AW) and Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) and SPLM-N announced the establishment of a new alliance called the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF).

The statement issued by the SRF from an unspecified location is resolved to bring down the regime of the National Congress Party (NCP) through popular and military means. They also announced their determination to fight the regime in all of Sudan’s regions including the capital Khartoum.

The spokesperson of the Sudanese government, Kamal Obeid, said that Juba’s support to rebels is an indication of their ill-intentions.

Obeid said that South Sudan is evading its main functions with regard to its relations with Sudan or neighbouring countries. He said that the rebel groups were dependent on Libya and Chad for support and are now looking to Juba for help even though it has no means to do so.

The NCP deputy media officer Yasir Youssef said that the new alliance is one with an agenda of racism and sabotage. He called on South Sudan to stop supporting the rebels and worry about its own internal problems.

Undermining whose security? The defense minister seems to have short or no memory at all! Who were the ones doing cross-border bombing few days ago?
I believed the question might refresh his recollection.

    Mr Pussycat Hussein

For decades you and your predecessors have been getting support from, US, Iran, Iraq, Russia, China among others to oppress your own citizens with total brutality.

    So stop your noise.

(SRF) will continue its efforts until a somewhat fairer representation in the centre of all N. Sudanese is achieved.

Logic, the illogical Jalabbbi in southerners shoes.Even if we are opressed this is not about liberating us from opression; this is about weakening and dividing the country. South Sudan is " liberated" now; is it that country where the minimum of basic human rights are respected?!Unfortunately you and your brainwashed commarade donnot know what is realy happening...

        Mr Ali

I really don’t understand your problem, your NCP are the cause of division, cause of oppression, cause of systematic racism, cause of economic downturn. The sooner you grow up the better for you.

Calling me names isn’t going to help you or your racist colleagues. Its baffling how you seem to think that N. Sudan is inclusive in politics, culture and social structure.

Am not calling for international intervention or eradication of Arab Sudanese. But am certainly calling for change in the centre of power and since this can only be achieved militarily, so be it!

Nafi Ali Nafi: "we didn’t come to power via elections, so those who want to remove us from power, let them use the same methods" Another words, they’re not willing to give up power democratically.

You keep referring to S. Sudan as a comparison but yet claim N. Sudan is far better. Its like saying "my neighbor doesn’t allow his kids to play in the streets so don’t worry about me beating up my kids"

        S. Sudan separated because southerners didn’t feel included in the old Sudan, so whether its was part of a grand international agenda or otherwise is irrelevant because they had a just cause.

Don’t avoid points of contention and hurl abuse, its just amusing and adds no substance to your opinion. I’m not here to win an argument against you. Call me racist, as its your opinion but a "jallabi in southerners shoes" is just funny.

So stop arguing and start debating.

Do you think N. Sudan is in good shape (politically, socially and economically), if not, what are your proposed solutions?

I think Mr. Kiir is a bad student or may be dull and stupid too because he didn’t learn the lesson from Chad, Ethiopia, Eritrea and also idiot Museveni, these countries tried their best to overthrow Sudan government with a full support from US and the West but it turned out to pose a direct threat to their shaky presedential chair and they became very good friend...

      lol

"full support from US" This is too funny to warrant a full response but I’ll just say this, if the US or any militarily powerful nation lent their full support to N. Sudanese rebel groups (let alone a neighboring state) Khartoum would fall within days.

This jalaby dude is hilarious! loool.

Khartoum government is heavily scalating this issue with RoSS at this time despite RoSS supports to SPLM-N never stopped at any time and nothing new here for Sudan government, I think Khartoum government finally took a crucial decision to overthrow the current south Sudan government because they given up and despaired of dealing with this irresponsible government...

...I won’t be surprised if the south rebels launch a major attack against RoSS and liberate more than one state in the south within few days or weeks, I think Khartoum government is preparing the world not to blame them when the attack happens but to blame RoSS instead, I think it is just a matter of time till south rebels prevail!

We don’t have any enough rebels to worry about. Don’t listen to nonsense propaganda. South Sudan rebels are just an equivalent of one unit. No body care about their attacks. It is not a massive rebellion like what you will face very soon in your backyard. Jalaby, you need to look for where you will be safe in a few days coming. Don’t waste your times here arguing.

Imperatively, it is true that both South and North Sudan are supporting each other rebels for common interests. I mean it is intelligently and evidently true that South Sudan is supporting all the Northern Sudan rebels, not only with ammunition supplies and intelligence and logistice coordination but with manpower in the battlefields. Many SPLA soldiers from South Sudan have just died in Nuba/kurm

In addition to that, the North Sudan is also backing up the South Sudan rebels with an assistance of military supplies, intelligence and logistice coordinations. I believe both regimes in South and North Sudan are brutally corrupted and cruel, and so I wish both rebels to succeed against them. I am from South Sudan former SPLA red army and I need a regime change in South Sudan due to corruption.
