In accordance with the transitional constitution of South Sudan which came into being on 9 July 2011 when the new state got its independence, the National Elections Commission would be formed by the President of the Republic after consultations with the political parties and civil society organisations in the country.

In their consultative meeting on Thursday chaired by the Vice President, Riek Machar, who is also the deputy chairman of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party, the political parties and civil society organisations agreed to forward their respective nominees on the selection of the membership of the commission.

This independent commission shall comprise of nine members who will be appointed by the President and confirmed by the national parliament.

The Vice President’s Press Secretary, James Gatdet Dak, told Sudan Tribune that the chairperson, deputy chairperson and chief electoral officer shall be appointed by the President as full time members from among the nine selected and appointed members.

Machar urged the political parties to also compare notes on their respective nominees for a possibility of agreeing on a nominee brought forward by another political party.

In line with the transitional constitution, the members are expected to be qualified independent personalities who shall not be influenced by government, state or public officers, political parties or candidates for office.

Further, the national elections act provides that a member shall be of proven integrity, independent, competent, non-partisan and impartial. He or she shall also be a person who has not been a candidate in general elections or an agent of a candidate.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place next Tuesday where the final list of nominees will be presented to the President Salva Kiir Mayardit who will pick the nine members from the submitted candidatures.

The electoral body must be free from those who had rebel against the SPLM. Does it means that there was no electoral body from in our constitution?

4Justice, you seem to be the one who is actually retarded! How retarded would you be when the person you believed to be retarded control you?

Look, those who are truly knowledgeable don’t run around telling people they are well-informed; the people know they are; only the fools act that way. You better wear a sensible brain if you have one!

People should acept their weakness. This commision should be lead by a non tribalistic person who want this country to grow. Not people who only want to be leaders but has no mind of how to move the country. I mean Salva kiir and Machar

Given that Kiir is so stucked and his leadership is breed with rampant corruption and he’s still eyeing to lead while Riak Machar had no gut to challenge him in 2015, I feel like to challenge Kiir comes 2015. Kiir 10 yrs ruling is enough. SPLM must groom a new, pragrmatic forward looking leader. If they don’t have one, I’ll nominate myself justto show Kiir that South Sudan is sick of him. Hemust g

      ABRAHAM?

I agreed with you that although MR. KIIR has so many achievements in his leadership, he should go. But tribalism to how I know it, will not change except corruption simply ONLY if laws are imposed against.

NEC should be Independent body from President and sworn in by country legislation department. National Election Commission should be volunteers from none-Parties members. They should be legislated at the parliament level. Not by pick by Kiir and Riek, as they will influence for their appointment. We do not want both Riek and Kiir to stand for elected 2015 anymore. for the peace in the country
