February 10, 2011 (KHARTOUM)-The top military command of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army on Thursday said repelled forces loyal to General George Athor from Fangak County, Jonglei State, following a clash between the two armed forces on Wednesday and Thursday in the area.

Dok James Puok, spokesman of the rebel group in an interview with Sudan Tribune from Juba claimed Wednesday that their forces captured Fangak County from SPLA forces after launching an attack on their operational outposts in three different locations.

General Bol Koang, a SPLA division commander in the area on Thursday said South Sudan army have expulsed forces loyal to General Athor and took control of many areas Athor claimed to have captured on Wednesday.

"Our forces expulsed Athor’s immediately after entering the area yesterday. They never slept in Fangak. They entered without exchanging fire with any armed group because there were no forces in the area".

"There were only three policemen in the town", said General Koang through a language assistant during a telephone interview with Sudan Tribune from Jonglei.

James Maluit Ruei, commissioner of Fangak County also in a separate interview with Sudan Tribune confirmed expulsion of forces loyal to General Athor from the town on Wednesday.

"Forces loyal to General George Athor entered Fangak at around 2:00 PM and were expulsed by the SPLA forces the same day at around 5:00 PM. They did not spend the night in the town", said commissioner Ruei.

Ruei said the SPLA troops on Thursday defeated the insurgents and took the control of the all areas and. But he was unable to provide figures of the casualties at the time of the interview.

"I cannot give you a correct figure now because the fighting is still continuing. I have just talked to General Koang and he told me that his forces are still pursuing forces loyal to General Athor. He did not give me figures of the casualties", he said.

The resumption of hostilities days after the announcement of the referendum results raises concerns and fears for stability in the South Sudan after the independence next July.

Experts underline the crucial need for infrastructure in the underdeveloped and divided region to impose the authority of the new state. The lack of roads prevents the quick deployment of the army and police throughout the South Sudan.

ATHOR DENIES TO BE DEFEATED

Speaking to Sudan Tribune from his base, Athor denied expulsion of his forces but said instructed them to withdraw from the area Wednesday.

"I asked zonal commanders yesterday after I received reports that they entered Fangak to withdraw because we did not have intention to capture it". They were only acting in self defence because it was the SPLA forces which launched an attack on our positions", said Athor confirming that only 4 of his men were killed in today’s attack.

"The SPLA say they have killed 12. This is just a media propaganda. It is not true. We do not have 12 people killed. I have a report indicating that only 3 of our soldiers were lost during the second attack this morning", said General Athor.

BUT SPLA SAYS 12 REBELS KILLED

Colonel Aguer Panyang, SPLA spokesperson in a separate interview reiterated that George Athor’s forces attacked military posts belonging to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Fangak County, Jongeli State yesterday on Wednesday and again today on Thursday, but were expulsed.

He said only four SPLA soldiers were reported killed in the attacked and several others on the side of General Athor.

"At the moment we have reports that 12 men loyal to General Athor were found dead during military surveillance and sentinel search", said SPLA spokesman Philip Aguer.

"This is a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement. Not only did he attack our forces but laid landmines. This is dangerous to the lives of the local population", he stressed.

The military officer said Athor launched another attack in areas around Fangak County in an attempt to retake the town again this morning but ended up being defeated by SPLA forces.

He said SPLA forces stumbled on a landmine laid by Athor’s, resulting into injuries but declined giving details.

ATHOR WANTS PEACE DESPITE ATTACKS

Dok James Puok, spokesperson of General Athor in Juba described Thursday’s clash as one of the "heaviest" clashes but also declined giving any detail of the clash saying he still did not receive full report from the field.

Dok reiterated commitment to pursuing peaceful settlement. "We are committed to settlement this dispute through dialogue not guns. This is why we are here with the authorities. We are seeking peaceful settlement of this conflict".

"The president is also committed to peaceful settlement but there are people whose acts go contrary to directives of the president but we still believe there will be peace", he said.

While the two sides said still collecting figures of the casualties, police authorities in the area said death toll from yesterday and today’s clashes have risen to 65 on both sides.

"A lot of people have been lost. We found a lot of people dead yesterday and again today. "As of now, there are 65 people identified dead from both sides", said policeman who did not want to be named having not been allowed by the policy to speak to the media.

TIME TO BEGIN LIBERATION OF BOR AND LOU NUER IN JONGLEI

We have just finished the S. Sudan lberation. Our next liberation will be on Murle. This liberation has to happen, otherwise, our fight against the Arab will be meaningless because a total freedom has not been achieved in Jonglei state and especially in our home counties. All we need is to gather our youth, where ever they maybe and then lead our next struggle against the murle for the next five years. They are our next oppressors and we have to achieve your our freedom at all cost. They are doing what Arab was not even doing to us: Arab was concerned mainly with oil. Murle is killing our mothers and fathers and abducting and selling our children. They are taking away our wealth in forms of cattle. Is this the community we have to work for?
We need all our youth from Bor and Lou Nuer including those that are driving tanks in Abyei right now, whose their children and parents are being slaughter in cold blood. This youth is from Bor first before they are from S. Sudan. They have to rescue their parents before they do any good to the public. This has to happen, otherwise life for our community will be meaningless on earth. This is serious, it will definitely lead to anarchy. Towns cannot accommodate all villagers. The murle needs to be defeated and faced seriously with destruction in order to stop this barabaric act that is not found anywhere in the world except in Jonglei.
folks, don’t wait for this Salva’s gov’t to release you from JIU and your other units to give you a green light. We just have to mobilize ourselves and do what Lou Nuer did in 2008 to Murle for five years. Murle will stop only when their lost is greater than their gain. This is the only medicine they need. All else will fail. Peace talks and police deployment will not work.

To those who worry about the ICC. Does the ICC endorse killing and selling of other human beings? And in their countries, what do they do to people who kill other people?
War between us and the Murle must begin as soon as the Arabs are out of the south.
This is the only thing that will stop them from raiding our elderly and children when our youth is busy in the army building South Sudan.

        To General Peter Bol Kong,

I have realized that the so-called ceasefire signed with Gen. George Athor Deng was just a fake one.

Some leaders in GOSS might have thought that the process was done to end the war, but others just wanted the ceasefire to use it for playing their dirty and deadly games.

I assume that the reason why George Athor was taken to Pangak as assembly area was to export his activities to Nuer territory and devastate it.

I recommend that you chase his forces back to his Dinka territory in Khorfulus/Pigi and fight the war there. Let the war devastage his own territory and even other Dinka territories in Jonglei if that is the intention of the matter.

Don’t allow his forces to rest in Nuer areas, whether Pangak or Ayod.

Jonglei is destined to be devastated according to the conspiracies involved in this Athor’s rebellion.

General James Hoth Mai should stop chewing his tongue and act responsibly.

Kuol Manyan, Gier Chuang & Majok Agot including George Athor are the Students of John Garang play book, that is ’keep your enemy in chaotic situation so that they would not turn their attention on you’’.

That’s what Dr. Garang been doing pitting foolish commanders against each other for 20 plus year civil war.

Taking the war to Ayod ,Pangak, Akobo, and other Nuer areas won’t be tolerated.

Warning: I called on the Chief-of-General staff in name only. Gen Hoth Mai Nguth, To step down in the light of the agreement he did to allowed Gen. Athor forces in pangak as stationary area for them. It’s inexcusable act of cowardice by a Gen. who got his promotion because he was recommeded by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief and he(Gen. Matip Nhial) thought of the former of having competency of solving the corruption within the SPLA, which have seen an average soldier from the rank of colonel not getting the salaries for half year or so, which was the norms under the former chief of General staff Oyai Deng Ajak with his deputies including Salva’s in law..Salva Mathok. He was not brought in as indepenedent thinker or stratgies or visionary or displinary, which he doesn’t have,.

Eventhough I’m from Upper Nile, state, I’m sorry to say he isn’t type of person to manage this situation.

Those who know him very would testify to the fact that he is never even raised his finger against Kuol Manyang or to Garang, when Nuer officers were being Lynched by those gentelments in Juba or in around Equatoria in the early ’90s

Including those in Juba so call spokesman Mr Dok who was he prior to Athor’s Rebeliou, now he is the Athor’s media-mouth feeding making himself as a commander, wow what a country, I think Athor known weakest part of Mr Kiir that is why he just took the gun to the bush than the Laws to the court-Room, If he has any grievance with anyone or country ,he would have went to court to challege the result.than to take un civilians option as a solution for grievance.

Bor has been the victim of Nuer and Murle for a long time and they do not want to lift a finger to defend themselves because they consider themselves honourable and intellegent. This is really pathetic, people like "George Athor" acted childishly and irresponsibly as if he doesn’t know the reason why he was fighting for "twentyone good years" in the bush.

What i personally know so far, southerners shall be in gloomy and doomy destiny unless something miracle happen to pave the way in the right direction from these kind of folks like (george), and many more whose their aims is to risk other innocent people lives for their own power-greed.

With this sort of ambition, i came to the fact that we are an imprecation of our own selves, something has to be done to quell this..... it’s totally peace disturbance in the region, and it’s something the (Goss) must deal with accordingly if they want peace to prevail in the region and southern sudan at large.

Athor is an agent employed by southerners’s enemies to hinder and disturb the progress of the emerging new nation from attaining its climax, and by doing so.......is apparently going to proof it to the whole world that we aren’t capable in governing our own selves.

This is what our enemies striving for, they are looking for weak-hearted like"George" and so many more other traitors in order to accomplish their evil-intentions/wishes.

You present traitors better learn from past traitors and if not then bear that in your minds that you ’re olny gettin’ used by your masters against your own people and later on be turned down just like the rest of them traitors, take a dull risk and you will be paid in your own dime otherwise do something reasonable.

#1. That Kiir should fire Gier Chuang and replace him with any competence person from any tribe who posseses security credential

#2. That those two areas of Jonglei you have mentioned should have been annexed back to their rightful state, the Upper Nile.

It was Dr. Garang who annexed those two areas in order expand the territory of Jonglei. But I believed the Land commission and the residents of those two areas of will remedied the gross violation done to territorial integrity of Upper Nile state.

JUBA, Sudan (AFP) – Clashes between rebels and south Sudanese troops in troubled Jonglei state have killed 105 people, a southern army spokesman said on Friday, a dramatic jump from an earlier death toll of 16.

"On the side of the military that includes the SPLA, the police and the prison services, 20 were killed in Fangak town, while 30 of Athor’s men were killed," Philip Aguer told AFP.

He was referring to renegade southern general George Athor whose supporters launched a spate of attacks on troops of the south’s Sudan People’s Liberation Army on Wednesday, shattering a "permanent ceasefire" they signed just last month.

"Sadly, there were 39 civilians killed, including women and children, and 65 others wounded," as well as 30 wounded SPLA troops, Aguer added.

The death toll from the fighting in Fangak town on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, adds to an earlier toll of at least 16 dead from clashes between southern troops and the rebels in the Door area of Fangak county.

"The number of casualties is high because the attacks were a surprise. This is something we were not expecting because we trusted the ceasefire that was signed," Aguer said.

There was no immediate response from Athor, when AFP tried to contact him by telephone, but speaking to the independent Sudan Radio Service on Thursday he accused the southern army of starting the attacks.

The renegade general launched his rebellion last year after claiming he was cheated in an election for the governorship of Jonglei state, the south’s most populous.

Athor’s men signed the January ceasefire with the southern army just days before a landmark referendum on independence for the south but he himself stayed away from the signing cermony in the regional capital Juba.

Southern officials have charged he used the ceasefire period to recruit more fighters.

The attacks come just days after the formal confirmation of the results of the January 9-15 referendum, which showed almost 99 percent of southerners voted to secede and split Africa’s largest country in two.

Previously the southern army had accused Athor and his men of acting on behalf of Khartoum in a bid to destabilise the south, a charge northern officials have denied.

Analysts have said that maintaining security in the fledgling southern nation will be a major challenge.

Clashes in oil-producing Upper Nile state earlier this month killed 54 people and wounded 85, according to United Nations estimates, when southern former militiamen inside the northern army rebelled against orders to surrender their heavy weapons.

On Wednesday, a gunman shot dead southern minister Jimmy Lemi Milla in his office, an attack reported to be motivated by a personal dispute.

Unwanted animalist behaviors in Southern Sudan

There was once a saying that any “Any Dinka you see on a suit still carries a tail on his ass” If you didn’t understand let me elucidate for you. It means that they are animals predominantly “cows” born next to a cow and will die because of a cow.

General George Athor is a real pig with two tails ugly son of a bitch

This is very good contribution to sudantribune by advising the people the way you said your words. Some people are very stupid. They make differences by insulting tribes. If we continue like that,it will bring clash amongst the communities especially Nuer and Dinka will go back to war like what happened in 1991.Development wil not be brought by only one tribe. But all tribes in South Sudan will unite and develop the new nation.

    As NgunDeng predicted

"mi wa jie cuong, caa kueer nag ee Gier".
mean leadership has been taken by Gier and Marol aci kat ee!. Gueth mia ke Lueec! Ngok wia Lueec kie Ngundeng.

Gat kiir tie ca gaak Luak. Kiee aa Gier kon cub,Ngok bia wee Luak Deng. mean they will go to parliamnet leadership.

so there are some issues here;that are not clear from Ngundeng about Athor,Gier and Kuol.
    need more analysis.

Let face it this time, there will be no room for Athor if Kuol and Gier in power. so everything will not be right. Those two have over power Kiir in political awen wen and they are moving Movement by their own will.

they think they are the backbone of SPLA/M while others are not.
