September 29, 2011 (JUBA/KAMPALA) – 1.3 million South Sudanese, mainly from Jonglei and Upper Nile states, have insufficient food supplies this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry told parliament in the capital, Juba on Wednesday.

Presenting the food shortage report to parliament, was Betty Achan Ogwaro, the minister of agriculture and forestry. She blamed the food shortage on blockades on the North Sudan border during the build-up to 9 July, when South Sudan declared its independence.

Ogwaro said the Rapid Crop Assessment carried out in August showed that country was likely to produce 420,000-500,000MT of food this year - half the required amount. Also, that only 4 per cent of South Sudan’s potential agricultural land is being used accordingly.

Contributing factors, she said, are the surge in population due to returnees and increased fuel prices.

Ogwaro said that Upper Nile and Jonglei states have been “severely affected” by the food shortages because they do not have practicable road systems.

Inflation officially hit 57.1% in South Sudan in August partly due to increased food costs.

Insecurity has meant many people in these states have been displaced, making farming difficult. In April alone 3,000 people were displaced by cattle rustling incidents in Jonglei.. In July 10,000 people in Upper Nile were displaced by conflict between the Shilluk community and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.

A significant proportion of South Sudan’s goods are flown in from neighbouring countries at great cost. This will continue until infrastructure improvements provide South Sudan with the capacity to produce more of its own, and to import more economically.

Don’t blackmail the South Sudanese people that they are solely dependent on Khartoum import. It is the grave mistake this GOVT is making, otherwise you will make people believe that they were better off before than now.You should stop preaching that Khartoum import business.

    Dear all,

This is a sad news for us all. And it’s quite discouraging to hear these kind of news on daily basis, and it’s absolutely hard to imagine the situation of those who’re on the ground where these bad news are coming. But, what’s so disappointing is the way this government is handling. And they should be urges to do something urgently instead of being in absolute silence as this unfolded

It is agood move from Ms minister to early ring the bell of coming hunger in some month to come in 2012.
But her report only concentrated in two states , which means that her ministery has no sufficient data on all ten states of South Sudan.

I think it better to Ms minister to collect accurate data from all states, then she find out that not only 1.3 million people are inshortage of food.

those two states are called lazy states, and corrupted. Nyandeng stole alot of money during her tenure as minister of road. she could not even built a single toilet in her state.

Thank you minister for alerting the public on the issue of hunger in these two states.
To die of hunger in our culture is really a shame but telling the truth will help prevent further hunger.let the government help the affected ones.
      May God help them.

    Dear Minister,
Your report shows your capability of addressing food insecurity in South Sudan. It shows that you are concentrating on your daily duties and responsibilites unlike other ministers who only sit in their offices and call for financial reports with the hope of getting huge sum on unpaid salaries so that they send their office managers to collect it for them at the end of the day.

We’ve Western Bhar al Gazelle state, Warrap state and so on which was severely suffered from the very mentioned statement yet Madam Minister did not show up to visit physically other states. You’re one of the hard working South Sudanese public Servant but thinking while imbalancing your duty will help nothing. Thanks Madam, we still have more time for South Sudan.

Dear Minister, something is better than nothing, your 100 days actions may be lightening our citizens rather than staying like other Ministers who are just pocketing their pockets without knowing what is knocking at the South Sudanese doors,am sure if you can manage to visit all the ten states,it’s almost every state which has the food shortage, you alone can’t do anything unless the government joins

It is really sad ,when seeing our fellow citizens are starving to death as a result of mismanagement of their resources, our politicians put their interest above and leaving the common people whom they represent to starve to death.you can chose your actions but you can not chose the consequent of your actions.

Why are we surprise and complaining. Why won’t we be at constant risk of starvation if we don’t put our resources where our mouths are. Even after we got our independence, the expenditure on defense is staggering. Couple with the obsession of building a new capital when people are starving. We are reaping what we collectively sow. Things are yet to get worse than what it already is, watch this spac

I congratulate the minister for informing us of what we know is happening.Masses in South Sudan will not only be hungry in 2012, they are now hungry in 2011. The question is what is the government of the people doing about corruption and insecurity in the Country? Saying something about that might have enriched the minister press release, but let face it, is it her job? No it is the president job
