September 6, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) – Some 1,458 Eritrean refugees from various camps in Ethiopia were resettled to the United States (US) recently, the Ethiopian State Administration for Refugees and Returnees Affairs (ARRA) disclosed.

Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia - photo by refugee.wikispaceLast week, a group of 130 Eritrean refugees, after years of exile in Ethiopia, were flown to the US as part of the ongoing resettlement operation. They are among of the 6,800 Eritrean refugees, the US accepted to receive.

Ethiopia’s ARRA, an implementing partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), had plans to resettle 3,100 Eritrean refugees to a third country for the current Ethiopian year (which ends on 11 September) but has so far managed to resettle less than half of them.

The Ethiopian Administration’s Law and Protection Head, Estifanos Gebremedhin said that “the Ethiopian Government is providing all the necessary assistance to the refugees, due the firm stance it has for peace and its commitment to build positive ties with its neighbors.” He expressed his hope for the day when Eritreans would no longer have to flee their country and would be reunited with loved ones.

The third-country resettlement operation is being carried out by the Ethiopian Government in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the UNHCR.

Since the program began in 2006, 7,280 Eritrean refugees have been resettled in different western countries where they have begun new lives.

Currently there are 51,700 Eritrean refugees in five Ethiopia camps near the border with their homeland. Sudan Tribune learnt that on average, every month 1,800 Eritreans cross border to Ethiopia. 45% of them are members of the Eritrean Defense Force (EDF) and the majority of them are young.

According to the United Nations, the tiny Red Sea nation of Eritrea, with a population of around 5 million, has same the proportion of its citizens as refugees as can only be found in countries at war.

According to a state ARRA report received by Sudan Tribune a few months ago, despite tight border controls, which, according to arrivals in Ethiopia includes a shoot-to-kill policy, last year 11,653 Eritreans made it to Ethiopia. Among these, over 4,000 were soldiers from the EDF.

Reports indicate that, the influx of Eritreans to neighboring countries has sharply increased in the the past few years due to repression, gross human rights violations and forced conscription.

Recently the Ethiopian government reviewed its refugee policy and allowed Eritrean refugees to live outside refugee camps and settlements.

The newly introduced scheme, which came into force after talks between the Ethiopian government and the UNHCR, allows Eritrean refugees residing in camps to live anywhere they chose in Ethiopia, provided that they can sustain themselves financially.

The move was lauded by Eritrean refugees and exiled political groups who said “it opens a new chapter in mending people to people ties between the two countries.”

Ties between Ethiopia and Eritrea remain at tense after the 1998 border war, in which 70,000 people were killed.

What the world doesnot actually recognize is that many of these intended asylum seekers are from Tigray. Because the current totalierian government in Ethiopia has proposed a strategy to send as many members of the one ethinic group "Tiugray" as possible to the outside world to challenge the prsistent protest made by Ethiopians in Diaspora. So many of these people are Tigrians not Eriterians.

Apart from that even Eriterians donot have real cause inforced them to exile but their country is so poor and they couldnot sustain life as they wish. The only way to escape this abject poverty is by seeking asylum in the west and Us. That is why every Eriterians need Essayas Afeworke to stay in power to full fill their ambition and their fantasy comes true.

      That is the reality Guys.

the above coment, it does not have truth in it.He/ She writes " what the world does not actually recognize is that many of these intended asylum seekers are from Tigrai "the above commentator seems an Eritrean the the only destorted and far from truth. Ethiopia has a rule of law, when asylum seeker come to Ethiopia first register from the boarder patrol and take special number and then to the UNHCR independent and managed by international body, no way Ethiopian government control UNHCR, so you think you gonna distorted the truth from the fact, but it is easy traceable, when you write some thing you got to have some proof, I say you are an Eritrean or somalian, those two lawless and no constitution countries are can write whats avaliable to them " rumors "

Dear the above reader, I would like to assure you that I am not Eriterian or somalie. I am an Ethiopian who dislike Tigrians to the extreme. Because you are not Ethiopian in origin from the very first and yet your families rule Ethiopians with out their will.

You are the worest evil ever on our planet. No one as a human race be compared to you ’Tigrians’

This is the siplest crime commited by Woyane in Ethiuopia for the last two decades. Sending Tigrian asylum seeker in the name of Eriterian is so simple. Far worse than this Woyane is a bandit who sells Ethiopian lands to Sudan, Vast fertile lands to India, china, Egypt, Arab and others.

You tried to mention UNHCR. You know, it is preaty clear that this organization and others like World Bank and IMF are full of corrupted individuals like Meles Zenawi.

Just lets leave every thing to time. It will be revealed later when Woyaner is over thrown.

Believe it or not many of these people are Tigrians.

          .

Dear dislike Tigrians to the extreme, whether you Ethiopian or not you are a hater, hate is like a poison it gonna distroy you befor harm others, because the poison is inside you. You said " you are not Ethiopia in origin from the very first and yet your families rule Ethiopians with out their will " because of this sentence you are not Ethiopian all the kings and quenes originated from Tigrai, Axum, from quene Saba to king yohanes more than any country in the world the origin of Fidel ( the only written alfabet in Africa ) the origin of christianity, the birth place of kidus Yared, the facilitator of toleranc, Tigrai gave shelter to muslim brothers in their bad times, so Tigray was and is the origin of Ethiopian civilization and Ethiopia, and now you can see how transform Ethiopia in all aspects, but I share some thing with you NOT HATE but I do not like EPRDF how handle Eritrean affair.

              Dear Tigrian,

Are you mentaly sound. I donot think so. You had said so many fabricated stories made by your masters in TPLF.

How on earth Tigray had been on the forefront to led other Ethiopians in civilizatioon. Are you serious . It could never and ever been the leading figure in such remarkable endeavor, Rather Tigray was until the emergence of TPLF the last and abandoned region in the face of other regions in Ethiopia. Because both its people(inhabitants) and the landscape was worhtless to invest national resources for nothing.

What you said about Negst Saba...bla bla bla are not the history of Ethiopia if they are history for that matter it would be for the Tigray not for Ethiopians.

The major negativ erole Tigrians played against Ethiopians is as follows.

Collaborating with Somalians to attack Ethiopians during the war waged in between the two nations 1969EC.

Attacking Ethiopians for 17 continious years during the derg era.

For the last 20 years ruling the entire nation by force

Distroying national soverignity by reaching to concensus with SUdan to give vast teritories of Ethiopia for ever.

looting national resources and investing in Tigray and depositing peoples wealth in foregn banks

These are the pecular characterstics of Tigray and they are well known in THEFT AND LIE.

So you are who you are. Nothing new .

I am Wolleye not Eriteria or Somalie
