October 30, 2010 (BOR) – The first high profile wrestling match between Jonglei states’s Dinka Bor tribe resulted into a landslide victory for wrestlers from Bor county as they beat Twic East county’s team 11—0 on Friday.

In South Sudan traditional wrestling is predominantly practice by the Dinka Bor ethnic group in Jonglei state.

However, it is also common in Lakes state among the Aliap of Awerial county and Atuor who live in Yirol county.

The Mundari tribe in Terekeka county of Central Equatoria also have a wrestling culture.

All of the tribes that practice wrestling keep cattle as it used to be common between youths from different tribes at cattle camps.

But the organizers of Friday’s competition in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, say they aim to lift the sport beyond social pride.

“Firstly, it will create jobs to the talented [….] wrestlers who traditionally do it for the social pride and fame with no material benefit,” said Moses Kur Akech, a member of organizing committee in an e-mail sent to Sudan Tribune.

In the match-up in Juba game Bor county won the first two fights with Majok Jok-rir (Bor) beating Deng Agok (Twic East) and Ajang Garang (Bor) winning against Athiei Chol (Twic East).

In the a highly charged start the two Twic East strongmen were both beaten in less than a minute.

The third match nearly resurrected hope for Twic East but the wrestler had to be content with a draw.

From then on Bor won nine of the remaining 12 fights, with Twic East managing only three more draws.

Organisers estimate that over a thousand people paid entry fees of between SDG 15 – SDG 100 ($6 - $42) to watch the match at Juba stadium.

Back in Bor town, supporters who did not have the chance to travel to Juba for the match gathered in groups and followed the game by mobile phone.

Celebrations ensued when the wrestling was declared over. Bar and restaurants owners will long remember the day for all the customers they received.

The Bor county wrestlers who shined in win include Mayen Reech Akuak, Alier Majur Awuang, Thon Kon Mabiei, Deng Mawut Arok, Ajith Nyakuoi, Amol Majak Amol, Akau Kuol Nyok and Dot Thok among others.

The fourth drawn match was contentious as members of Bor county claim it should have been awarded to them as a win.

Organizers say the winning team will receive a prize valued at 30 cows.

The main financial challenge to maintaining traditional wrestling, is having to stage the event in Juba as there is no stadium in Bor with the capacity to host the event.

        Chol,

Stop the term Bor South! that is a highly charged political name that John Garang brought about to mess up with our Bor County name.
We have nothing called Bor South and Bor North.
Only Dr Garang could explain what he meant by those political terms if he resurrect from his grave.
All we know since time immemorial is " Bor and Twic".

The Abandoned names of Bor North, Bor Central and Bor South were not brought about by Dr John Garang DeMabior who deserved as a second saviour to Southerners associated to the son of man salvation who saved you and us. Those names were initiated by the residences of Duk, Twic and Bor then adapted by the SPLM.

What Dr Garang brought about was the name of the SPLA/M. He also created a system that confirmed the true names such as Duk, Twic and Bor Counties.

Twic residents, we bow down on the name Twic and we love by whole heart that means Twic residents are not disadvantaged by not being called Bor Central as well as Duk’s resident.

The team cannot be condemned because of losing the game instead still there are lots chances.

This type of wrestling sports originally used to be that of Nubans in their mountains. It is good that the Bor community has picked up to be among the rest of sporting competitions like football, basket ball, boxing, kungfu, long distance running and the rest.

There are many people from different communities in the South that know how to wrestle like the Nubans. I hope it would be good to join in such wrestling sports too.

          Hey Gatwech
It has never originally been for Nubian but both communities practise it. It is a culture practicse of Bor, Aliap, Atout and Nubiam. It was not borrowed anywhere.

I like the way it was done. This shows the richness of South Sudanese cultures and mind you that most of the sport games played in Europe and Asia were borrowed from South Sudan in the ancient time.

          Hey Mr Gatwech,

You are Nuer personel without reasoning capacity my dear. Why are you jealous about the wrestling game in Bor Town? Everybody and I know that wrestling is in everywhere, but not everybody takes it as a hobby in their traditional lifestyle as Dinka Bor People do. In Nuer traditional, young men are taught the tactics to loot the properties of others. Do you think that looting is in everywhere in Southern Sudan? Well, if you think that looting is in everywhere in Southern Sudan, you might be right anyway, but it is one of the first hobby in Nuer traditional Society. So, stop being jeolous.

      To Chol,

It’s advisable that, you refrains from using those silly names on this web, if you don’t know who you are?, than I know who am?, instead of using invalid naming for political purposes.

      To Gatwech,

Don,t be fool by unrealistic sources, to conclude that wrestling is solely from/for Nuba.

So, this is the root of peace. Without peace, such event will not happen otherwise wrestling and other culture need to shown to the young generations because young generation had been addicted to sport and many modern activities in our country.

Dear Journalist or Editor Thon Phillip Aleu,

I have indeed appreciated the work you done today by showing our mainly cultural activities known as (Ayaang) in Dinka dialect to be known worldwide by the rest of the people who haven’t seen it physically. But not much different with what we usually watched on the TV daily especially to those who in the western countries or within some African developing countries are exactly already knew function and benefits of wrestling even small kids are really wants to know and learn how to obtain this possess in their life.

Finally, I have seen some areas within the Lakes State have been mentioned or identified. Who’s their citizen been involves in wrestling culture, a part from Bor community. That were Aliap and Atuot, of the Yirol county no whereas, I think some crucial information were left out there which could make sense in the history of wrestling how this development had become and exist amongst the variety communities Bor of Junglei State and Yirol in Lakes State. Therefore, I am truly not agreed with the writer opinion for one reason simply because, Yirol have three participant organs in the history of wrestling in the past and present however, these both group are all very really well at the sport to the extent. Ciec people of Yirol East reside along the corner of the rivers of Yirol places whereas previous ethnics group been mentioned in the statement are the ones I think can be the champions of this sport near the future if I am not wrong. For instance, here are the names of the CIEC wrestlers of whom their record were on the ears of people there whether in greater Yirol and Bor as well:

Khoc Aleeth, Bol Adut, Matueny Butic Alier, Akec, known as (Akac-raan) Madok Anai, Mabek Butic, Mapuor Arop, Bol Beny Til, Agook Jok, Achop Aring and Makur Akech Deng who defeated Bor’s wrestler or champion known as Guet Mayouk between 1993-94 these are some of the previous wreslers I know but I don’t know they curren wrestlers because my world has came being different with theirs world.

It was a great day for the fools but to the wise was a day of WOES because all the boring comments I read are all leading us to the hell of division. I do not blame all the participants here but the irresponsible journalist. Journalist must be sensible and responsible when reporting because they are the eyes of any nation. Beside, the ethics of journalism are against anything that brings prejudice which seems to be the centre of interest of Mr. Thon. I just want to remind the reporter who was not at the scene that the results were not as reported but were something else, please come to your senses and revive your reporting.

Isn’t it great to have a sport that we call our own? (the Southerners). One that is entertaining, peaceful and possibly a source of income in the long run. As already mentioned; this is a great undertaking by the organisers to show an opportunity this sport has in contributing into a soon to be newest nation economy.

Ironically though, we are so much caught up with prejudice, pride, cynicism, criticism and whinging that we let this rich traditional sport and a potential revenue generating event divide us than unite.

This sport among others in my understanding could possibly as mentioned of course be a source of employment, a mean of tourist attraction as well as an attraction to both local and foreign investors. As we all may agree, it doesn’t matter whose this sport belong to, but how it impact in the life of individuals and that of the nation as a whole.

Tribal identity and ethnic groups are a good source of identities, pride and belonging. But I suppose now is the time we should focus on national interest and togetherness, especially now that we all are excited in having our own nation. It is inevitable these subdivisions will technically be gone in a matter of generation or two and as a matter of fact, isn’t it a fair play, we are championing by separating from the oppressive NCP government in the first place??

Also I would to thank Mr Phili for the info and great wrestlers of Jonglei State in general.Win or lose is the part of the game, but the great title of culture that you all representing mean a lot. It is not matter Of wrestling. Since culture has great impact on language and traditional activies, itis natural that cultural awareness should be given enough attention. There are some things that united people in this world such as Sport, education, military and Cultural Activties. throught all of these. People get united. I know and Have witnessed through my entire life.Such activities bring people together through out the hardship and many more.Lets encourage the unification among our people and to show the great view to the world. Any thing could make huge different in our society.I wish to see more of those every season like somebody mention early.not just only Jonglei, but through the whole souhtern state.

      Thank you all

One love for all. Hope for the Future. Hope for the South Sudan Independent.
