January 15, 2011 (JUBA) — Unknown gunmen on Saturday shot dead South Sudan’s country director for the medical group African, Medical Research Foundation (AMREF), under unclear circumstances, an eye witness told Sudan Tribune.

Dr. Alemayehu Seifu, a renowned Ethiopia medical doctor was reportedly killed in Malakia, located in the outskirts of Juba late evening. The killers, according to the eye witness, also made off with his car and other personal belongings.

So far, neither officials from the South Sudanese government nor the police have issued any statement in relation to Dr. Seifu’s death. However, an official from AMREF said the organisation is due to issue an official statement on Dr. Seifu’s death.

The brutal murder of AMREF’s county director will likely raise more concern on the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the South Sudanese capital. In December last year, lawmakers in the national assembly summoned three ministers, the Central Equatoria state governor and the Juba mayor to explain why so many people were being killed and robbed in Juba.

However, efforts by the legislative assembly, residents say, have yielded very little fruit with more cases of robbery and killing reportedly occurring in Juba payams (districts).

Prior to joining AMREF South Sudan, Dr. Seifu, who held a Masters in Public Health, previously served as the organisation’s deputy country director in Ethiopia; a position he held since September 2007.

He also worked with World Health Organization (WHO) as regional surveillance coordinator in Ethiopia country office, CARE International and Amhara Regional Health Bureau, Ethiopia.

"As long as the Juba capital city has many Bhar El gazalians , no peace will ever prevail in the city".
You may remember very well that Bhar elgazals use to spear people to death in a car on their way to Rumbek when it was the movement’s capital and say that "Luath e Bith diene Kajong, meaning take that spear of mine to Rumbek".
Equatorians are very good people and have nothing to do with such".

There is a real need for hiring personal security or bodguards to be sure Juba will a be save place for you somehow. In Juba, only those generals are the one who are safe. They have prepared security for themselves and they don’t care about the rest. Therefore, the right to own arms for individual personal security should our number 1 demand in RSS

This is not South Sudan Problem only but rather covers the whole of Africa. There is no doubt the killer had been hired as hit man.... There is a foul play across Africa and the people who have these ill motives are way beyond Africa borders. Remain vigilant and do not be tempted to take bribes to kill.

This pro-Arab man who called himself Magaya was just sent by Khartoum to destabilize the South. My blame will go to the president by appointing the person who was serving as a Minister in NCP Khartoum until July 9th 2011, is this person trusted?????

Rt.General Alison Magaya, the Interior Minister of RSS is the right man. I know him and his family in person. He is not the problem, but the real problem is Kiir himself and the fact that one-tribe-regime is an evil and the curse of South Sudan Republic. Regime change is the only solution and it can only be achieved by force. Untill then, there will be no security in RSS

My friend, Bashir was indited coz of what has been carried out by SAF. Magaya is the Minister for interior, and since he assumed the office, the security situation in Juba has changed from good to bad and finally to worse. there was no rampant killing before he came to the post from Khartoum.

For your information there is no one tribe regime if u know the tribes of South Sudan very well.

I think de minister of Interior has nothing 2 do with that instead there is a conspiracy being done by some people who thinks they r de only ones who deserve to be in such sensitive ministry. I know you need someone from your tribe to be in this position, but there is no way a coubtry cannot be developed that way. Moreover Magaya is not a muslim.

Sad news for our young nation. The South Sudan is harvesting bad image every single day. The spread of illegal activities will increase every day unless we amend very serious law against those who kill people at will. Looking other properties and depriving the lives should be equate to death sentence. Fire squad of years during the war must be implemented as soon as possible.
