Tong Lual Ayat was a member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), the South Sudanese former rebel movement from 1986 - 2009. The SPLA is now the official military of independent South Sudan and the political wing - the SPLM - the ruling party of South Sudan.
In 2009 Ayat formed the United Democratic Party, for which he claims he was illegally detained by the SPLM.

Ayat announced he had formed a rebel group - called the South Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SSPLA) - in December after the UDP was not included in South Sudan’s post-independence parliament.
In May 2012 Tong Lual Ayat announced that his South Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SSPLM/A), were on the verge of integrating into the South Sudanese army (SPLA).
