Sudan-Iran Relations
Sudan has long courted deeper ties with Iran. The two nations signed a military cooperation agreement in March 2008 and Iranian warships visited Port Sudan twice in 2012.
Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has made several visits to Iran. In August Bashir attended the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which was held in Tehran.
Sudanese rebels have alleged in March 2012 that Khartoum has asked for military assistance to help fight the conflicts in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Tehran has denied that a deal has been done with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to send members to back the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) fight the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) rebel alliance.
Khartoum’s closer relations with Iran have created some rifts within Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) with foreign minister Ali Karti suggesting that the country would be better served by developing relations with Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations with predominantly Sunni populations.
