Name: Guor Maker (formerly Guor Marial)

Position: Track and Field Athlete

Born: 15 April 1984, Unity State, South Sudan

Early life:

At eight years old Marial had to flee from a South Sudanese displaced persons camp in 1994 and made his way to Egypt, eventually successfully seeking asylum in the United States aged 16.

Family

Both Marial’s parents survived the Sudanese civil war but 28 members of his family, including eight brothers and sisters were killed. He has not seen his parents in over 20 years.

Aug. 12, 2012 - London 2012 Olympics - Place: 47/85 (20 DNF) - Time: 2:19:32

Citizenship: Marial was granted US citizenship in February 2013 but was stateless ahead of London 2012 Olympics so was granted special permission to run as an independent.
