East African Community (EAC)

The East African Community (EAC) is the regional intergovernmental organisation of the Republics of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Rwanda and Republic of Burundi with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

Somalia applied for membership of the EAC in February 2012 and South Sudan applied in 2011.

South Sudan

Just months after South Sudan’s independence the 54th member of the African Union applied for entry into the EAC. The application has been deferred twice; first in April 2011 and then in November the same year.

A communiqué issued at the end of the November summit in Nairobi, Kenya, said that the bloc wanted to conduct more negotiations with Juba after a progress report on South Sudan’s admissibility was presented to leader of member nations.

According to a report by the state-owned Tanzania Daily News on 12 December 2012:

The reasons for deferring the two countries admission were not clear. But at a past forum in Nairobi, Kenya’s East African Community Minister Musa Sirma said sporadic cases of conflict between Juba and its northern neighbour could hurt the country’s bid to join the EAC.
